Children love being able to identify animals and imitate the sounds they make. Identifying animals, matching each sound with an animal p icture, and imitating animal sounds build children's knowledge of the world around them. Even children who are not yet talking can make a cow sound: "Mmmmmmmmoooooo."
Keep an assortment of stuffed animals or animal puppets or toys in a bag or basket. Hold the basket on your lap and pull out the animals one at a time. While displaying an animal, sing a song that names it and imitates its sound. Pull out a few different animals and sing a new verse for each one.
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O,
And on his farm he had some cows, E-I-E-I-O.
With a moo moo here
and a moo moo there,
Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo moo.
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.
*Repeat with other verses: horses neigh, pigs oink, and sheep baa.
Or, Read a book in which animals make sounds. Try Hello, Day! by Anita Lobel or ask our children's staff for more recommendations!
