Some nursery rhymes help children develop narrative skills. Those skills will later help them understand what they read. Giving children aids, like pictures, helps them to remember the sequence of a story and makes it easier for them to retell the story in the correct order. Try it at home!

As you recite each line of the rhyme "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," show the appropriate picture: shoe, door, sticks, gate, big red hen. One, two, buckle, my shoe.
Three, four, shut the door.
Five, six, pick up sticks.
Seven, eight, here's the gate.
Nine, ten, a big red hen!
